On the subject of banned games, this is the intro movie to Left 4 Dead 2. In my opinion this is the best cinematic trailer I've ever seen. Not so much for technical accomplishment, but because it's friggin' great. I'd go see this flick. It's a first-person team-based cooperative shooter, and they've managed to make the characters so likeable that I find myself really invested in their survival. And they're very well drawn with a relatively small amount of dialogue. I never get sick of watching this. And the music is just great.

Moments that get me in this is Nick's delivery of "Looks like there's been a change of plan" (just look at the way they've evoked his enunciation of that line with the shape of his mouth, and the way that final word is punctuated by it puffing out of his mouth*), and the shot of the guys in hazmat suits walking through flame, and then turning toward camera.

The extremely cool thing about the game though is the way Valve's incorporated two dialogue wheels ('orders' and 'answers') each with multiple variations on the same entries. What this amounts to is the ability to communicate quickly with team-mates in character using actual dialogue that effectively complement and interlock with each other. "Cover me, I'm healing!" --> "You got it." --> "Okay, go ahead, I'm right behind you." --> "No way." --> (laugh) --> (laugh)... and so on. And given the characters are such individuals the script writes itself with each playthrough, and contextually can be really hysterical. This, IMO, is gaming as a competent and assured piece of craft. Art, even.

* Character modeling is finally starting to take notice of the one thing that makes a human face unique and distinctive: teeth. Pay attention to dental structure and you start getting faces that seem like people.

Hmm
By the time I get this first draft done, I reckon I'll be lucky to have 20,000 words. That won't cut it.

Eeenteresting. I reckon expanding this might be fun.

Oh for fuck's sake.

Aliens vs Predator banned in Australia.

"If we hide from the future we'll be okay." What are we? Feudal Japan with beer?

That said, I got L4D2 without any hassles at all. Downside is most people don't know how, meaning it's tough finding a low-ping game anywhere. Which is fine as I need to work more anyway.

Finland, Finland, Finland...

A Taiwanese player has has become the first to complete every single one of World of Warcraft's achievements - which is probably as close as anyone can come to "completing" the game.

MMO Champion (via GamePro) reports that the character Little Grey, a Tauren Druid, is the first and only player to have 986 out of 986 achievements listed on his Armory page. (In fact, he's missing one World Event achievement, but a bug has balanced it out with 165/164 PVP achievements.)

Little Grey has 100 mounts and 75 vanity pets; has completed every quest in the game, visited every location, and defeated every dungeon and raid boss; has made over 100,000 valid player kills in PVP and achieved 100 victories in each of the game's Battlegrounds; has achieved Exalted reputation with 40 separate factions, and more.

According to Little Grey's Armory stats, the character has played 2124 Arena battles, taken 1911 flight paths, completed 5906 quests (an average of just under 15 a day) died 8543 times and killed 496,539 players and creatures. Little Grey has also hugged eleven times, waved once, LOL'd once and has never cheered.

Christ. That poor, poor bastard.

Ah.

I guess this is why we should live our lives instead of watching television (says the girl as she watches youtube videos as she knits - but I suppose the knitting is a good enough excuse :P )

I love my new desktop.

I am so tired today; I only got around 3-4 hours of sleep last night (But not for lack of trying). Earlier I went out shopping with my mother-in-law to buy gifts for the kids she chose from the Salvation Army angel tree, which is something we do every year. I think we did a good job; if I was one of those kids, I'd be really excited with what I got.

Lacy and I are currently watching the Khan episode of TOS, which is naturally lolarious. After it's over, I think I might curl up with more Michael Chabon and call it a night.

In other news, Lacy bought us some electric blankets the other day, and I don't think I have ever seen the cats this happy.

Been getting a weird kind of tingly giddiness lately that comes and goes in rushes. Often punctuated by a quickly-peaking-then-dying rushing sound in the ears (as opposed to, say, the legs, I guess.) Mildly disorienting, feels weird, makes it a little difficult to concentrate. Can feel a little head-rushy I guess.

Does this sound familiar to anyone familiar with the effects of eyestrain?

Okay, something less rage-filled.

korvapuusti (a pastry), as I mentioned somewhere on this LJ, translates as 'ear pouch'.

korva = 'ear'
puusti = 'pouch'

If puusti = pouch, then pussi = 'bag'

So, if you need a large bag, then you need a...

Ha.

[info]glockgal, being the lovely person that she is, is hosting a fanart love meme. So, go put your name in if you're an artist, or give love if you're not.

I will now disappear back into my hole and continue working on my own art (If anyone wants a wee preview, I may consider it under a lock).

I just did a friends cut, mostly journals that haven't been updated in 3+ months. If I've cut you by mistake or you want to give this LJ-friendship another shot anyway, please comment to let me know and I'll add you right back!

Also. If you're seeing this despite not usually seeing my posts on your feed, it's probably because you have me on your f'list and I have yet to friend you back. This is most likely my fault as I am notoriously atrocious at getting back to friend requests. If you still wish to be my friend, please leave me a comment here or on my f'lock post and I will most likely friend you back. If you are no longer interested in being my friend, this is a headsup that I can still see you F'locked entries, so feel free to remove me if you are so inclined.
